Bhringraj is the herb Ayurveda names first for hair — keshraj, king of hair. Wherever the classical texts discuss thinning, shedding or early greying, this is the plant they reach for.

The powder is the whole leaf, dried and milled. It is the form to use if you make your own hair masks, and the form that mixes into henna.

Powder or Oil?

Different jobs, and most people eventually use both.

  • The powder is a weekly mask. Stronger per session, more work, and it rinses out completely.
  • The oil is a twice-weekly scalp treatment. Gentler per session, far easier to keep doing.

Consistency usually beats intensity, so if you will only do one, do the oil. If you already make masks, the powder belongs in them.

How to Use It

As a hair mask

  1. Two to three tablespoons in a non-metal bowl, depending on hair length.
  2. Add warm water a little at a time to a smooth, yoghurt-thick paste. Let it sit twenty minutes.
  3. Apply to the scalp first, then down the length.
  4. Leave forty-five minutes to an hour. Do not let it dry hard.
  5. Rinse thoroughly with water. Shampoo only if you need to.

In a henna mix

Two tablespoons of bhringraj into your usual henna quantity. It conditions the mix and takes some of the dryness out of a henna session.

Mixes well with

Amla, shikakai, reetha, methi and hibiscus.

What to Expect

Once a week, judged at eight to twelve weeks. Hair cycles are slow and nothing changes that. The first sign is usually less hair on the drain rather than new growth.
