Hibiscus is called the flower of hair care in South India, where it has been ground into hair masks for as long as anybody has been making them. The flower and leaf are both used, and both are mildly mucilaginous — which is why a hibiscus mask leaves hair noticeably softer than it found it.
For Hair
- Conditioning and shine — the most reliable thing it does, and you notice it after one use.
- Scalp hydration — for a scalp that feels tight rather than oily.
- Growth and fall — traditionally used for both, over months rather than weeks.
- In henna — deepens the colour and adds a reddish warmth.
How to use
- Three tablespoons of hibiscus powder in a non-metal bowl.
- Add curd for dry hair, or warm water for a lighter mask. Mix smooth.
- Apply to the scalp and down the length.
- Thirty minutes. Do not let it dry hard.
- Rinse well, then a mild shampoo if needed.
Once a week.
For Skin
Hibiscus is mildly exfoliating and is used for dark spots and uneven tone.
- Two tablespoons with a little milk and a teaspoon of honey.
- Apply to a clean face, avoiding the eyes.
- Fifteen to twenty minutes, then rinse warm.
- Mist a toner and apply a gel while the skin is still damp.
Mixes well with
Amla, bhringraj, methi, henna.
Also available as hibiscus hair oil, which is the easier form if you would rather not mix a mask.
