Amla is the oldest hair herb in India and the gentlest of the classical three. Indian gooseberry, dried and milled — used for dullness, breakage and early greying, and traditionally mixed into henna to deepen the colour and take the dryness out of it.

What It Is For

  • Early greying — the traditional herb for holding natural colour. A long game, measured in months.
  • Dull, brittle hair — amla is high in vitamin C and it is the shine herb.
  • Hair fall and dandruff — as part of a weekly mask rather than on its own.
  • Face packs — used occasionally for fine lines, though it is primarily a hair herb.

How to Use It

As a hair mask

  1. Two to three tablespoons in a non-metal bowl.
  2. Warm water, added slowly, to a smooth paste. Rest it twenty minutes.
  3. Scalp first, then the length.
  4. Forty-five minutes to an hour. Do not let it dry hard.
  5. Rinse well. Amla can be slightly drying, so condition after.

In henna

Two tablespoons into your henna mix. It darkens the result and makes the session far less drying — this is the single most common way amla is used in India.

Mixes well with

Bhringraj, shikakai, reetha, methi.

Honest Expectations

Amla does not reverse grey hair. Nothing does. It is traditionally used to support natural colour and slow the process, and treating any product that claims otherwise with suspicion will save you money.

For shine and strength, once a week, judged at eight weeks.
