Reetha — soapnut — is the cleanser in the traditional Indian hair wash. It is where the lather comes from, and it is strong enough that it is almost never used on its own.
What It Does
Reetha is high in saponins, which is to say it genuinely cleans. It lifts oil and build-up the way a mild shampoo would, without sulphates and without stripping colour.
On its own it can leave hair dry. That is why the classical mix is two parts shikakai to one part reetha — shikakai softens what reetha cleans.
How to Use It
The traditional wash
- Two tablespoons shikakai, one tablespoon reetha, one tablespoon amla.
- Warm water to a thin, pourable paste. Rest twenty minutes.
- Work into a wet scalp, massage two to three minutes.
- Rinse extremely thoroughly.
As a clarifying wash
Reetha alone, once a month, strips heavy oil or product build-up — including a stubborn oiling that will not wash out. Follow it with a conditioner or an oil, because it will leave hair squeaky.
Beyond hair
Reetha is also the traditional detergent for washing silk and woollens, and for cleaning gold and silver jewellery. A spoon in warm water is enough.
Keep It Out of Your Eyes
Reetha stings sharply. Tilt your head back when rinsing and keep children's eyes well clear.
