Bhringraj is called keshraj in Ayurveda — king of hair. Of all the herbs India uses for hair, this is the one the classical texts name first.

What It Is

Eclipta alba is a small creeping herb that grows in damp ground across India. The whole plant is infused into a carrier oil over low heat until the oil takes on its properties — the traditional method, and the reason a good bhringraj oil is dark and smells strongly of herb rather than of perfume.

What It Is Used For

Hair fall

The primary traditional use. Bhringraj is taken up in Ayurveda wherever hair is thinning or shedding more than it should.

Premature greying

Traditionally the herb associated with holding natural colour. Used over months rather than weeks, and usually alongside amla.

Thinning and weak growth

Massaged into the scalp to improve circulation at the root — which is where the massage matters as much as the oil.

Sleep and calm

A scalp massage with warm bhringraj oil before bed is one of the oldest home remedies in India for a restless head.

How to Use It

  1. Warm the oil — stand the bottle in hot water for a few minutes. Never heat it directly on a flame
  2. Section your hair into four to six parts with a tail comb
  3. Apply along each parting with your fingertips, working on the scalp rather than the lengths
  4. Massage for 10 minutes — fingertips, not nails, slow circular motions
  5. Work what's left through the mid-lengths and ends
  6. Leave 1-2 hours, or overnight for dry hair
  7. Shampoo on dry oiled hair first, then wet and lather

That last step is the one people miss. Shampoo binds to oil far better without water in the way, and it is the difference between one wash and three.

How often

Twice a week for most people. Three times for dry hair and scalp. Once a week if your scalp is oily, left in for an hour rather than overnight.

Blending It

With coconut oil — 2 parts bhringraj to 1 part coconut, if you find bhringraj heavy.

With rosemary essential oil — 4-5 drops of rosemary in 2 tablespoons of bhringraj makes the standard growth blend.

With amla oil — equal parts, the traditional combination for greying.

How to Tell Real Bhringraj Oil

This is worth knowing, because the market is full of plain carrier oil with green colour added.

  • Dark green to near-black, but from the herb, not from dye. Hold it to the light — real infused oil is deep and slightly cloudy, dyed oil is bright and clear
  • Strong herbal, slightly grassy smell. If it smells mainly of perfume, the perfume is covering something
  • It should stain a white cloth faintly green and wash out. Dye stains and stays
  • Carrier oil named on the label, not just "mineral oil" or "base oil"
  • Dark bottle. Light degrades infused oils quickly

What to Expect

  • Week 1-2: less itching, hair feels softer and less brittle
  • Week 4-6: noticeably less hair coming out on wash day
  • 3 months: stronger hair, less breakage, visible difference at the roots
  • Greying: this is a long game — six months minimum, and it is about slowing rather than reversing

Who It Suits

Anyone with hair fall, thinning, early greying, or a dry irritated scalp. It suits all hair types, though fine hair may prefer it diluted with a lighter oil.

If your scalp is very oily, use it for an hour before washing rather than overnight.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I leave it overnight?
Yes, and it is slightly better for dry hair. Do not leave it for days — after about twelve hours there is no extra benefit and oil sitting on the scalp attracts dust.

Will it make my hair fall more?
No. What you see on an oiling day is hair that had already shed being released by the massage and combing. It was coming out anyway.

Can I use it every day?
Not necessary. Two to three times a week is the useful range.

Does it actually reverse grey hair?
No oil reverses grey. Bhringraj is traditionally used to support natural colour and slow the process. Treat any product claiming to reverse it as dishonest.

Why is it so dark?
Because the herb has genuinely been infused into it. Pale bhringraj oil is weak bhringraj oil.

Can I use it on a dandruff-prone scalp?
Yes, but for an hour rather than overnight, and consider adding a few drops of tea tree.
