Methi is the kitchen herb that earned its place in hair care. Fenugreek seeds are high in protein and mucilage — the slippery substance that forms when they soak — and that mucilage is what conditions hair and calms a scalp.
The Step Most People Skip
Let the paste rest for twenty minutes before you use it. The mucilage needs time to develop, and a mix used immediately is a fraction as effective as the same mix used twenty minutes later. This is the single difference between methi working and methi not working.
For Hair
- Two parts methi powder to one part coconut oil, or to warm water for a lighter mix.
- Mix to a smooth paste. Rest twenty minutes.
- Apply to the roots and through the length.
- Leave twenty to thirty minutes. Do not let it dry hard.
- Rinse thoroughly, then shampoo if you need to.
Once a week. Used for hair fall, dandruff and dullness, and it is one of the better natural conditioners for coarse hair.
For Skin
- One tablespoon of methi powder with a little milk or curd.
- Rest it, then apply to a clean face.
- Ten minutes, then rinse warm.
Used traditionally for dullness and for the skin under the eyes. Follow with a toner and a gel while damp, as with any mask.
Mixes well with
Amla, bhringraj, shikakai, hibiscus.
A Note on the Smell
Methi smells like methi, and it lingers a little after washing. A final rinse with water and a capful of rose water deals with it.
