Two combs in one piece of wood: wide teeth down one side, fine teeth down the other. It is the format most Indian households grew up with, and it is still the most useful single comb to own.

How to Use the Two Sides

Wide side first. Always. It takes the tangles out without pulling, which is the only safe way to start on dry or wet hair.

Fine side second. Once the hair is tangle-free, the fine teeth smooth it down, lay the cuticle flat and give that sleek finish. They also make clean, sharp partings.

Going straight to the fine side on tangled hair is how people break their hair and then blame the comb.

What It Is For

Smoothing and finishing

The fine side is what a wide tooth comb cannot do — it flattens frizz and makes hair look groomed rather than just untangled.

Spreading hair oil evenly

Wide side to distribute, fine side to work the oil right down the length so the ends get some too.

Sectioning and partings

The fine teeth give a straight, clean parting, which matters if you oil your scalp section by section.

Combing through a herbal hair pack

Wide side while the paste is on, so it reaches every strand.

Why Neem Wood

Plastic combs are moulded, and moulding leaves a seam along each tooth that catches the hair cuticle on every stroke. A wooden comb is cut and sanded, so there is nothing to catch. Wood also carries no static, so fine hair stops flying away.

Neem is the wood traditionally chosen for combs in Ayurveda, and what the comb does mechanically is spread the scalp's own oils down the hair while massaging as it goes.

Twin Tooth or Wide Tooth Only?

If your hair is very thick, curly or textured, a wide tooth detangling comb on its own is usually enough — you will rarely use the fine side. If your hair is straight, fine or medium, the twin tooth is the more useful comb.

For the rosewood version, see the Sheesham Twin Tooth Comb.

Looking After It

  • Wipe dry after use; keep it out of the bathroom
  • Never soak it — water swells wood and cracks it
  • Rub a little coconut or almond oil into the wood once a month
  • Clean between the fine teeth with a dry toothbrush

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the fine side be used as a lice comb?
It is finer than a normal comb but it is not a dedicated lice comb — those have much tighter teeth.

Can I use it on wet hair?
Wide side only, and dry the comb afterwards.

Is it good for fine hair?
Yes — fine and straight hair is exactly what the fine side is for.
