A wide, flat bamboo brush for brushing out long hair. The paddle shape covers more hair per stroke than a round brush, which is why it is the one to reach for when you have a lot of hair to get through.

Why Bamboo and Not Plastic

Two reasons, and the second matters more than people expect.

No static. A plastic brush charges hair as it passes through, which is where afternoon flyaways come from. Bamboo cannot hold a charge.

No moulded seams. Plastic bristles are moulded, and each one has a fine seam that catches the hair cuticle every stroke. Bamboo pins are cut and sanded smooth.

Bamboo is also a grass rather than a hardwood — it regrows without replanting, which is why it has become the standard for brushes of this kind.

What It Is For

Daily brushing on long hair

The paddle covers a wide area, so long hair takes a fraction of the strokes.

Spreading the scalp's natural oils

The traditional reason for brushing properly at night — it carries the oil your scalp makes down the length of the hair, where it is actually useful.

Scalp stimulation

The cushioned base lets the pins press into the scalp without digging in.

Smoothing before tying hair up

A paddle brush flattens the surface in a way a comb does not.

How to Use It

  1. Detangle first with a wide tooth comb — a brush is for smoothing, not for knots
  2. Start at the ends and work upwards
  3. Finish with long strokes from the scalp down to the tips
  4. Brush at night rather than in the morning, so the oils have time to spread

Not on wet hair. Wet hair stretches and snaps; use a wide tooth comb until it is at least mostly dry.

Looking After It

  • Pull the collected hair out of the pins every few days
  • Wipe the pins with a dry cloth; never submerge the brush
  • Water in the cushion is what ruins a bamboo brush — keep it out of the bathroom
  • Store it pins-down or on its side

Frequently Asked Questions

Brush or comb?
Comb to detangle, brush to smooth and distribute oils. They do different jobs and most people need both.

Can I use it on wet hair?
Better not to. A wide tooth comb is the right tool for wet hair.

Is it good for curly hair?
For curls, a wide tooth comb on wet conditioned hair is usually better — brushing dry curls breaks up the pattern.

Does it help with hair fall?
It reduces mechanical breakage, which is a real and commonly missed cause. It does nothing for hair fall that starts at the root — that is what oiling is for.
