Bhimseni kapoor is natural camphor — crystallised from the wood of the camphor tree rather than manufactured in a factory. It is the camphor that has always been used for aarti and puja in Indian homes, and the one people mean when they say asli kapoor.
Bhimseni or Ordinary Camphor?
Most camphor tablets sold today are synthetic, pressed from turpentine-derived feedstock. They look similar in the packet. That is where the resemblance ends.
| Bhimseni (this one) | Synthetic tablets | |
|---|---|---|
| Source | Camphor tree | Turpentine, industrially processed |
| Form | Irregular natural crystals | Uniform pressed tablets |
| Smell | Cool, sweet, slightly minty | Sharp and harsh |
| Burn | Clean, almost no residue | Sooty, leaves black marks |
| Traditional use | Aarti, puja, havan | Mothballs, fumigation |
If a camphor crystal leaves a black ring on your aarti plate, it was not Bhimseni.
What It Is Used For
Aarti and puja
The traditional camphor for the aarti flame. It burns out completely and leaves the brass clean.
Clearing the air in a room
Burned in a camphor stand or warmed in a diffuser, camphor freshens a closed room quickly. Useful after illness in the house, or in a room that has been shut up for days.
Keeping insects away
A few crystals in a muslin pouch in the wardrobe or behind the almirah. Camphor is the original moth repellent, and the reason it sat in every grandmother's steel trunk.
Monsoon damp and musty cupboards
Crystals left in a closed cupboard take the stale smell out of clothes and linen during humid months.
How to Use It
For aarti: one crystal on the aarti plate or in a camphor burner. Light it and let it burn out.
To freshen a room: burn one crystal in a camphor stand, or warm two or three in a diffuser. Ventilate the room afterwards.
In a wardrobe or trunk: four or five crystals in a thin cloth pouch. Replace every six to eight weeks as they sublimate away.
In the car: a few crystals in a pouch under the seat — or use our ready-filled Bhimseni Camphor Air Freshener.
Storing It
Camphor sublimates: it passes from solid straight to vapour at room temperature. That is why it never leaves a wet residue, and why an open packet slowly empties itself. Keep it in an airtight container somewhere cool and dark and it keeps for years.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this the camphor used for puja?
Yes. Bhimseni is the traditional camphor for aarti and havan.
Why does it cost more than camphor tablets?
Because it comes from the camphor tree rather than a chemical process. Synthetic tablets cost a fraction to produce.
Can I burn it indoors?
Yes, in a ventilated room, the way camphor has always been burned. Not in a sealed room with no airflow.
Why has my packet shrunk?
Sublimation. Keep it airtight and it stops.
Can I put it on my skin?
Not in crystal form — it is an irritant neat.
