Salai guggul is Indian frankincense — the resin of the Boswellia serrata tree, and one of the most studied substances to come out of the Ayurvedic materia medica.
Ours is pure resin, cleaned and sorted, with nothing added.
What Salai Guggul Is
The boswellia tree grows across the dry hills of central India. Its bark is cut and the resin bleeds out and hardens into pale golden tears, which are collected by hand.
Its Sanskrit name is shallaki, and this is the herb Ayurveda associates most directly with the joints.
A Note on the Name
Salai guggul and guggul are two different things, and the shared word causes constant confusion.
| Salai Guggul | Guggul | |
|---|---|---|
| Tree | Boswellia serrata | Commiphora mukul |
| Sanskrit | Shallaki | Guggulu |
| Known as | Indian frankincense | Indian bdellium |
| Main traditional use | Joints | Metabolism, fat |
| Appearance | Pale gold tears | Dark brown sticky mass |
This product is salai guggul — boswellia. If you are looking for the metabolic herb, that is a different item.
Traditional Uses
Joint comfort and mobility
Salai guggul's central and best-known traditional use. It is the herb classical texts name for the joints, and the reason boswellia is now widely sold internationally.
Supporting movement
Traditionally taken over months by people who want to stay mobile as they age.
Respiratory use
The resin has a long traditional use in the chest, both taken internally and burned as incense.
As incense
Burned on charcoal, salai guggul is the Indian frankincense used in temples and homes. The same resin serves both purposes.
How to Take It
With warm water
¼ to ½ teaspoon of powdered resin in warm water, once or twice a day, after food. Taking it after food matters — resins on an empty stomach often cause discomfort.
With warm milk
¼ teaspoon in warm milk at night. Traditional, and gentler on the stomach.
Grinding the resin
The resin comes as hard tears. Chill them in the fridge for 30 minutes first — cold resin grinds cleanly, whereas warm resin turns gummy and sticks to the jar.
As incense
A few tears on a lit charcoal disc. It gives a clean, slightly citrus-pine smoke.
Dosage
| Starting out | ¼ teaspoon once a day, after food |
|---|---|
| Regular use | ¼ to ½ teaspoon, once or twice a day |
| Best time | After meals, never on an empty stomach |
| How long | 8-12 weeks. Joint support is slow |
How to Tell Good Salai Guggul
- Pale gold to light amber tears, somewhat translucent. Dark brown sticky lumps are guggul, not salai guggul
- Clean citrus-pine smell, like frankincense
- Hard and brittle at room temperature, not soft or tacky
- Clean, with no bark, grit or sand. Bark and sand are the usual bulking materials in cheap resin
- Burns cleanly on charcoal with a white smoke
Who Should Be Careful
- Pregnant and breastfeeding women
- Anyone on blood thinners or anti-inflammatory medication, without medical advice
- Anyone with acidity or a sensitive stomach — always take it after food
- Before surgery — stop two weeks ahead
- It should not replace any treatment prescribed for a joint condition
