A toothbrush with a bamboo handle instead of a plastic one, and charcoal-infused bristles. Two in a pack, in plastic-free packaging.

Why Bamboo

A plastic toothbrush is used for three months and then exists for the next few centuries. Over a lifetime that is roughly three hundred brushes per person, none of which go anywhere.

Bamboo is a grass. It regrows without replanting, needs no pesticide, and the handle breaks down in a compost heap once the bristles are pulled out.

It is the easiest single plastic swap in a bathroom, because nothing about how you brush changes.

About the Charcoal Bristles

The bristles are infused with activated charcoal, which is absorbent and very mildly abrasive — it helps lift surface stains from tea, coffee and tobacco as you brush. It is not a whitening treatment and will not change the natural colour of your teeth.

The bristles are soft to medium, which is the range dentists have recommended for decades. Soft bristles and light pressure clean better than hard bristles and scrubbing, and they do not wear the gums back.

How to Use It

  1. Brush twice a day, two minutes each time
  2. Hold it at 45° to the gum line
  3. Small circles, light pressure — let the bristles flex rather than mashing them flat
  4. Rinse and stand it upright to dry

Replace every three months, or sooner if the bristles splay outwards.

Looking After a Bamboo Handle

Bamboo is wood, so it does not like standing in a puddle. Shake it out and keep it upright in a dry holder and the handle stays sound for the life of the bristles. Slight darkening at the base over three months is normal and does not affect it.

Disposing of It

Pull the bristles out with pliers and bin them — the bristles are nylon, the handle is not. Then compost the handle, or keep it as a plant label or seedling marker.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the bristles soft?
Soft to medium — the range dentists recommend.

Will the charcoal whiten my teeth?
It helps lift surface stains. It does not bleach teeth, and no toothbrush does.

Does the handle go soggy?
Not if you stand it up to dry. Leaving it in standing water is what damages bamboo.

Is the whole thing compostable?
The handle is. The bristles are nylon and need removing first.

How many come in a pack?
Two.

Can children use it?
These are adult-sized brushes, so they suit older children and adults.
