Arjuna has one clear identity in Ayurveda. Where most classical herbs are used across many systems, arjun chhal is the bark that texts single out for the heart.

Ours is pure bark of Terminalia arjuna, dried and ground, with nothing added.

What Arjun Chhal Is

The arjuna is a tall tree found across India, recognisable by its smooth pale bark that sheds in sheets. That bark is the part used. It is stripped, dried and ground — and because the tree sheds naturally, harvesting need not kill it.

Its use is documented in the Charaka Samhita and it has been described the same way for close to two thousand years.

Traditional Uses

The heart tonic

Arjuna is classified in Ayurveda as hridya — a herb for the heart. This is its principal and best-documented traditional use, and it is why the bark is still widely taken today.

Supporting circulation

Traditionally used alongside the above to support healthy circulation.

Strength and stamina

Given to support physical endurance, which follows from its traditional cardiac use.

Skin

The bark is astringent and is used externally in pastes for the skin.

How to Take It

Arjun ksheerpak — the classical preparation

This is the method the texts describe, and it is worth the effort.

  1. 1 teaspoon arjuna powder
  2. 1 cup milk and 1 cup water
  3. Simmer on a low flame until only the 1 cup of milk remains — the water should boil away
  4. Strain and drink warm

Take it on an empty stomach in the morning, or at night before bed.

With warm water

½ to 1 teaspoon in warm water, morning and evening. Simpler, if less traditional.

As a kadha

1 teaspoon simmered in 2 cups of water until reduced to one cup. Strain and drink warm.

Dosage

Starting out ½ teaspoon (about 1.5g) once a day
Regular use 1 teaspoon (about 3g), once or twice a day
Best time Empty stomach, morning or before bed
How long Traditionally taken over months

Important

If you have any heart condition or take any medication for blood pressure, heart rhythm, cholesterol or blood thinning, speak to your doctor before taking arjuna. It should never be used in place of prescribed treatment, and it may interact with cardiac medication.

How to Tell Good Arjuna

  • Pale pinkish-brown to light tan. Very dark powder suggests old or poorly stored bark
  • Distinctly astringent — it dries the mouth. That astringency is the herb
  • Finely sifted, without visible woody splinters
  • Bark only on the label
  • Sealed pack with a manufacturing date

Frequently Asked Questions

Milk or water?
Milk, as ksheerpak, is the classical preparation and the one the texts specify. Water is acceptable and quicker.

Can I take it with my heart medication?
Not without asking your doctor. This matters more with arjuna than with most herbs.

How long before it does anything?
It is a long-term tonic, traditionally taken over months rather than weeks.

Morning or night?
Either. Empty stomach is what matters more than the time of day.

Why does it make my mouth dry?
Arjuna bark is high in tannins and strongly astringent. That is normal and expected.
