Of all the oils used on hair, coconut is the one with the most research behind it — and the finding is specific enough to be worth knowing.

Coconut oil penetrates the hair shaft rather than sitting on top of it, and in doing so it reduces the protein your hair loses during washing. Most oils cannot do this; the molecule is the wrong shape. Coconut's is not.

What It Is

Cold pressed from fresh coconut flesh, unrefined and unbleached. Virgin means the flesh was pressed fresh rather than dried into copra first, which is what gives it the clean coconut smell.

What It Is Used For

Pre-wash protection

The best-supported use. Applied before washing, it reduces the damage shampoo does. Even an hour helps.

Dry, frizzy hair

Smooths the cuticle and reduces frizz, particularly in humid weather.

As a carrier for everything else

Most herbal and essential oils need a base. Coconut is the default across India, and it is the one classical preparations usually specify.

Skin and body

A plain, effective body moisturiser, and the traditional post-bath oil across much of south India.

Oil pulling

A tablespoon swished for 10-15 minutes, then spat out. A traditional daily practice.

How to Use It

Pre-wash treatment

  1. Warm 2-3 tablespoons by standing the bottle in hot water
  2. Massage into the scalp for 10 minutes
  3. Work through the lengths and ends
  4. Leave 1 hour minimum, overnight if dry
  5. Shampoo on dry oiled hair first, then wet

As a leave-in

A few drops rubbed between the palms and smoothed over damp ends. Very little — more than a few drops and it looks greasy.

As a carrier

2 tablespoons coconut oil with 4-5 drops of rosemary is the standard hair growth blend. The same base works for tea tree, lavender or neem.

Virgin vs Refined

Virgin Refined
Made from Fresh flesh, cold pressed Dried copra, heat and chemicals
Smell Clean coconut None
Colour Clear when liquid, white when solid Clear
Nutrients Retained Largely stripped

For hair the practical difference is modest — the protein-loss effect comes from the fatty acid, which both contain. For skin and for anything you ingest, virgin is clearly better.

It Will Go Solid, and That Is Fine

Coconut oil solidifies below about 24°C. In an Indian winter it will be solid in the bottle, and in Jaipur that is most of December and January.

Stand the bottle in warm water for a few minutes. Do not microwave it.

Oil that stays liquid at 20°C is not pure coconut oil — it has been fractionated or blended. The solidifying is a sign of what you have, not a problem with it.

How to Tell Good Virgin Coconut Oil

  • Clear as water when liquid, pure white when solid. Any yellow tint means heat or age
  • Clean, fresh coconut smell. Rancid or smoky means badly made or old
  • Solidifies below 24°C
  • Cold pressed and virgin both stated
  • No other oil listed in the ingredients

Frequently Asked Questions

Does coconut oil really stop hair damage?
It reduces protein loss during washing, which is the best-evidenced claim for any hair oil. Applied before you shampoo is when it does most of its work.

Will it make fine hair greasy?
On the scalp as a pre-wash, no. As a leave-in, use a few drops only.

Can I use it on my face?
On dry skin, yes. It is comedogenic for some people, so patch test if you are breakout-prone.

Why has it gone solid?
It is below 24°C. Warm the bottle. This is normal and a good sign.

Can I cook with it?
This is a cosmetic-grade oil intended for hair and skin.

How long does it keep?
Virgin coconut oil is unusually stable — two years or more stored in a cool dark place.
