Manjistha is the herb Ayurveda reaches for when the concern is skin. It is used both ways — taken internally and applied as a pack — and the traditional view is that it works best when you do both.
Ours is pure root powder of Rubia cordifolia, with nothing added.
What Manjistha Is
Manjistha is Indian madder, a climbing plant whose root yields a deep red dye. The same red pigment that made it a textile dye for centuries is tied to its use in Ayurveda.
Classical texts class it as the foremost raktashodhaka herb — a blood purifier — and in Ayurveda skin and blood are treated as the same subject.
Traditional Uses
Clear skin
Manjistha's principal use. It is the herb most associated in Ayurveda with clarity and evenness of complexion, taken over time rather than applied for a quick result.
Even skin tone
Used traditionally for uneven tone and marks, both internally and as a pack.
Blood purification
Its classical role. In Ayurvedic reasoning most skin problems trace back to the blood, which is why a skin herb is described this way.
Lymphatic support
Traditionally used to support the body's natural drainage and clearing.
Using It on the Skin
For clarity and glow
- 1 tsp manjistha powder
- 2 tsp curd or rose water
- ½ tsp honey
Leave 15 minutes, rinse with cool water. Twice a week.
For marks and uneven tone
- 1 tsp manjistha powder
- 1 tsp multani mitti
- Rose water to mix
Leave 15 minutes. Once a week.
For dry or sensitive skin
- ½ tsp manjistha powder
- 2 tsp aloe vera gel
Leave 10 minutes. Once a week.
A warning worth taking seriously: manjistha is a dye. Left on too long it will tint the skin faintly orange, and it will permanently stain towels, clothes and basins. Use a dark old towel and rinse the basin straight away.
Taking It Internally
With warm water
½ teaspoon in warm water, once a day. The usual method.
With honey
½ teaspoon mixed into honey, taken in the morning. Easier — manjistha is bitter and astringent.
As a kadha
1 teaspoon simmered in 2 cups of water until reduced to one cup. Strain and drink warm.

How to Tell Good Manjistha
- Brick red to reddish-brown. This is the clearest marker of all — pale or brown powder is not proper manjistha root
- Bitter and astringent
- Finely sifted, without woody fragments
- Root only, not whole plant
- Sealed pack with a manufacturing date
Who Should Be Careful
- Pregnant and breastfeeding women
- Anyone on blood thinners, without medical advice
- Patch test on the inner arm before the first face pack
- Manjistha may turn urine a reddish colour. This is the pigment and is harmless
Frequently Asked Questions
Internal or external — which works better?
Traditionally both together. The pack acts on the surface, the internal dose on what Ayurveda considers the cause.
Will it stain my face?
Not if you rinse at 15 minutes. Left longer it can leave a faint orange tint that washes off over a day.
Will it stain my towels?
Yes, permanently. Use an old dark one.
How long before I see anything on my skin?
Eight to twelve weeks taken internally. The packs show a difference sooner but more superficially.
Can I use it with neem or turmeric?
Yes. Manjistha with neem is a common combination for problem skin.
