Rose dhoop — gulab, the flower that turns up in more Indian rituals than any other, from the aarti plate to the wedding mandap.

Dhoop is the denser form of incense. There is no bamboo stick running through it, so nothing burns but the fragrant material itself, and the smoke is rounder and softer than an agarbatti gives you.

Why Dhoop Rather Than Agarbatti

An agarbatti is a thin paste coating on a bamboo stick, and some of what you smell is the bamboo. Dhoop has no stick in it.

That is why dhoop is what gets used for aarti and havan while agarbatti does everyday duty — the smoke is fuller and fills a room instead of drawing a line through it.

When to Burn It

Puja and aarti

Rose is the most offered flower in Indian worship. Gulab dhoop is how that scent gets into a room when fresh petals are not to hand.

Festivals and family occasions

Diwali, pujas, weddings, housewarmings — rose is the scent most people associate with all of them.

A room that has been shut up

It takes the stale, closed smell out faster than opening a window alone.

Before guests arrive

Twenty minutes before, not during. What you want is the scent it leaves behind, not the smoke.

How to Burn It

  1. Stand the dhoop upright in a dhoop stand, an incense holder, or a bed of ash or sand
  2. Light the tip and let the flame catch
  3. Blow the flame out — it should glow and smoke, not burn
  4. Set it on a heatproof surface, well away from curtains and paper
  5. Open a window or door

Never leave it burning unattended, and keep it away from children and pets.

Rose or Jasmine?

Rose is the more formal of the two and the one most associated with puja and festivals. Jasmine dhoop is sweeter and heavier, and suits evenings. Most households that burn dhoop keep both.

Pair It With

Burn it alongside Bhimseni Kapoor for a full puja setup. For rose on the skin, see Gulab Attar; for rose in your skincare, Steam Distilled Rose Water.

Frequently Asked Questions

No bamboo stick, denser material, fuller smoke.

Does it need a special holder?
Any heatproof stand, or a bowl of ash or sand. It has to stand upright.

Fuller than an agarbatti. Use it in a ventilated room.

Can I burn it every day?
