Gokhru is one of the few Ayurvedic herbs that crossed over into modern sports nutrition, usually under its botanical name, tribulus. In Ayurveda it has been used for far longer and for rather different reasons.
Ours is pure fruit powder of Tribulus terrestris, with nothing added.
What Gokhru Is
Gokhru is a low creeping plant with small spiny fruits — the name means "cow's hoof", after the shape of the spines. The fruit is the part used, dried and ground.
Two varieties appear in Ayurvedic texts: chota gokhru, the small spiny fruit, and bada gokhru, a larger different plant. Ours is chota gokhru, the one classical texts mean.
Traditional Uses
Urinary comfort
This is gokhru's oldest and best-documented traditional use in Ayurveda, well before any Western interest in the plant.
Strength and vitality
Classified as a vajikarana herb, used to support physical strength and vitality. This is the reason it is now widely sold to people who train.
Cooling and diuretic
Traditionally regarded as cooling, and used to support the flow of fluid through the system.
Stamina
Taken over time to support physical endurance, often alongside ashwagandha.
How to Take It
With warm milk
½ to 1 teaspoon in warm milk, once or twice a day. The traditional carrier, particularly when it is being taken for strength.
With warm water
½ teaspoon in warm water, morning and evening. Lighter, and the usual choice when taken for urinary support.
As a kadha
1 teaspoon simmered in 2 cups of water until reduced to one cup. Strain and drink warm.
Dosage
| Starting out | ½ teaspoon (about 1.5g) once a day |
|---|---|
| Regular use | 1 teaspoon (about 3g) a day, or split in two |
| Best time | Morning and evening |
| How long | 8-12 weeks |
Drink plenty of water while taking gokhru. It is traditionally regarded as diuretic and this matters more in summer.
Taking It With Ashwagandha
Gokhru and ashwagandha are a long-standing pairing for strength and stamina — ashwagandha for the body's response to stress, gokhru for physical vitality. Half a teaspoon of each in warm milk at night is the usual approach.
How to Tell Good Gokhru
- Greyish-green to pale brown
- Slightly bitter and astringent
- Well sifted. The fruit is spiny, so coarse powder can be prickly
- Fruit only, not whole plant
- Sealed pack with a manufacturing date
Who Should Be Careful
- Pregnant and breastfeeding women
- Anyone with a kidney condition, without medical advice
- Anyone on diuretics, blood pressure or blood sugar medication
- Anyone prone to dehydration, particularly in summer
