Ashwagandha is the most used herb in Ayurveda and the most adulterated one on the market. Most of what sells cheaply is stalk and leaf ground together with root, because the root alone is expensive.
Ours is root only, Withania somnifera, ground and sifted. Nothing added.
What Ashwagandha Is
Ashwagandha is classified in Ayurveda as a rasayana — a restorative taken over time rather than a remedy taken for a symptom. The name translates roughly as "smell of a horse", partly for the odour of the fresh root and partly for the strength it was said to give.
It is an adaptogen, which means it is traditionally used to help the body cope with stress rather than to act on any one system.
Traditional Uses
Stress and a busy mind
This is the most common reason people take it. It is traditionally used to support the body's response to stress and to settle a mind that will not switch off.
Sleep
The botanical name somnifera means sleep-inducing. Taken at night with warm milk, it is the classic Ayurvedic preparation for restless sleep.
Strength and stamina
Traditionally given to build body weight and physical strength, which is why it appears in so many preparations for people recovering their energy.
Daily vitality
Used over months rather than days. Ashwagandha is not something you feel in an hour.
How to Take It
With warm milk — the traditional method
- Warm a cup of milk
- Stir in ½ to 1 teaspoon of ashwagandha powder
- Add honey or jaggery if you want it sweeter
- Drink at night, around an hour before bed
With warm water
½ teaspoon in warm water, morning or night. Simpler, and suitable if you avoid dairy.
With ghee and honey
A traditional combination for building strength. Mix ½ teaspoon of powder with a little ghee and honey and take it in the morning.
In a smoothie or with food
The taste is bitter and earthy. Banana, dates, cocoa and cinnamon all cover it well.
Dosage
| Starting out | ½ teaspoon (about 1.5g) once a day |
|---|---|
| Regular use | 1 teaspoon (about 3g) a day, or split into two halves |
| Best time | Night for sleep and calm, morning for energy and strength |
| How long | Give it 6-8 weeks. It works gradually |
Start at the lower dose for the first week. Increase only if it suits you.
What to Expect, and When
- Week 1-2: most people notice sleep first
- Week 3-4: a steadier response to everyday stress
- Week 6-8: energy and stamina
If you have taken it for a week and felt nothing, that is normal. This is not a herb that works in a day.
Powder or Whole Root?
We sell both. The powder is ready to use and easier to dose. The whole root keeps its potency far longer and lets you see exactly what you are buying — you can grind it fresh or simmer it into a decoction.
If you are new to it, start with the powder. If you use it daily and want the best value over a year, buy the root.
How to Tell Good Ashwagandha
- Pale to medium brown. Very dark powder usually means stalk and leaf ground in, or old stock
- Strong horsey, earthy smell. Weak smell means weak powder
- Finely sifted, not fibrous. Visible fibre is stalk
- Root only on the label, not "whole plant"
- Sealed packaging with a manufacturing date
Who Should Not Take It
- Pregnant women
- Anyone on thyroid, blood pressure, blood sugar or sedative medication — speak to your doctor first, as ashwagandha may interact
- Anyone with an autoimmune condition, without medical advice
- Before surgery — stop two weeks ahead
Frequently Asked Questions
Morning or night?
Night if you want it for sleep and calm. Morning if you want it for energy. Many people split the dose and take half at each.
Can I take it every day?
Yes. It is meant for daily use over months. Some people take a week off every three months.
Why does it taste so bad?
Because it is pure root. Sweetened, flavoured versions taste better because there is less ashwagandha in them.
Will it make me sleepy during the day?
Not usually. If it does, move your dose to the evening and reduce it.
Does it help with weight?
Traditionally it was given to help build body weight and muscle, not to reduce it.
Can I mix it with other powders?
Yes. Ashwagandha with shatavari is a common daily combination.
