Rose Water: Twelve Real Uses and the One Mistake Everyone Makes
शेयर करना
Rose water is the cheapest thing in most people's skincare and the one they get least out of, because it is used as a finishing spritz when it is really a first step.
The one mistake
Rose water used on dry skin, with nothing after it, evaporates and takes a little of your skin's own water with it.
Water on the face is not hydration on its own. It is the layer everything after it works against. Mist it on damp skin and follow within thirty seconds with a gel, a cream or an oil, and it does its job. Spray it on a dry face at your desk and walk away, and you have very slightly dried your skin.
That single change — something always goes on top, and quickly — is worth more than switching brands.
Steam distilled, not flavoured water
Most of what is sold as rose water in India is water with rose fragrance and a preservative. Steam distilled rose water is what condenses alongside the oil when rose petals are distilled, and it carries the water-soluble part of the flower.
How to tell: it should smell faintly and slightly green, not like perfume. The ingredient list should say rose water or rose hydrosol, not aqua plus fragrance. It should sting nothing.
Twelve uses
1. As a toner
Straight after cleansing, on damp skin, before anything else. The standard use.
2. To mix a face pack
Any clay or powder mask — multani mitti, sandalwood, neem — mixes better with rose water than plain water and is gentler on the skin as it dries. Same cost, better result.
3. Immediately after a mask
A drying mask takes water out of the skin. This is the step that puts it back, and it is the one everybody skips.
4. Under a face oil
Oil seals; it does not hydrate. Mist first, then press the oil in while damp. This is how kumkumadi is supposed to be used.
5. To set makeup
A light mist after powder takes the flatness off.
6. On tired eyes
Two cotton pads soaked and chilled, ten minutes. Works for puffiness, mostly through the cold.
7. After shaving
Calmer than anything with alcohol in it.
8. On heat rash and sunburn
Cold from the fridge, with aloe gel after.
9. In the final hair rinse
A capful in a mug of water over the hair at the end of a wash. For the smell more than anything, which is a fine reason.
10. To refresh a face in summer
The one exception to the rule above — if you are outside in Jaipur in May, the cooling is worth it. Keep the bottle in the fridge.
11. On a pillow or in a room
A light mist on a pillowcase before bed.
12. To loosen dried product
A mask that has gone harder than intended comes off far more easily if you mist it first and wait a minute, rather than scrubbing at it.
Keeping it
Steam distilled rose water has no strong preservative, which is the price of it being gentle. Keep it in the fridge, use it within a few months of opening, and do not decant it into something you have not washed.
If it ever smells sour or looks cloudy, it is finished.
Our steam distilled rose water is ₹99 for 100ml. It is also in The Kumkumadi Ritual, The Age-Defying Facial and both sandalwood rituals.
