Brahmi Oil for Hair and Sleep: Benefits, How to Use It, and Why Both
शेयर करना
Of all the Ayurvedic hair oils, brahmi is the odd one. Bhringraj is for hair. Amla is for hair. Brahmi is for hair and for the mind, and it has been used for both for as long as anybody has written these things down.
That is not a marketing overlap. It is the point of the herb.
What brahmi is
Bacopa monnieri — a small creeping plant that grows in wet ground across India. In Ayurveda it is classified as a medhya rasayana, a rejuvenative for the intellect, and it is taken internally for memory and mental fatigue.
As a hair oil, the whole plant is infused into a carrier over low heat until the oil takes on its properties. A good brahmi oil is dark, smells green and slightly bitter, and does not smell of perfume.
Note that brahmi is also used in India for Centella asiatica — gotu kola, mandukaparni. Both are called brahmi regionally. For hair, the one you want is bacopa.
Why hair and the mind are the same conversation
A great deal of hair fall is stress before it is anything else.
Telogen effluvium is the name for the shedding that follows a shock to the system — an illness, a bereavement, a few months of very bad sleep. The hair does not fall at the time. It falls two to three months later, which is why people so often cannot connect the two and conclude their shampoo is at fault.
Ayurveda arrived at the same observation by a different route, and the answer it reached for is brahmi. Whether you accept the classical reasoning or the modern one, the practical advice is identical: if your hair started falling a few months after a hard period, treat the scalp and treat the sleep.
What brahmi oil is used for
A tight, itchy or irritated scalp
The most immediate effect, and usually the first thing people notice. Brahmi is cooling in Ayurvedic terms, which maps onto the sort of scalp that feels hot and tight by evening.
Hair fall that followed a stressful period
Not a quick fix. The useful window is two to three months, which is roughly how long the hair cycle takes to turn over.
Sleep
A slow scalp massage with warm brahmi oil before bed is one of the oldest home remedies in India for a head that will not switch off. Whether the effect is the herb or the ten minutes of massage is a question nobody has answered properly, and it may not matter.
How to use it
- Ten to fifteen drops is a dose for the scalp. These are concentrated infusions, not body oil.
- Warm it slightly — stand the bottle in hot water for a few minutes. Never heat oil directly on a flame.
- Apply on the scalp and massage with the fingertips, not the nails, in slow circles.
- Ten minutes if you can. With brahmi the massage is half the point.
- Leave it overnight. This is the one to do at night rather than before a morning wash.
- Shampoo on dry oiled hair first, then wet and lather. One wash instead of three.
Once or twice a week is the useful range. More often is not better.
Brahmi, bhringraj or amla?
They are not competing, and the honest answer is that each treats a different cause.
- Bhringraj — for hair that is actively falling. The strongest of the three.
- Brahmi — for a stressed or irritated scalp, and for sleep.
- Amla — for dullness, breakage and early greying.
Most people have more than one of these going on, which is why rotating three oils across a week works better than one oil used three times. We sell them together as The Three Oils for exactly that reason.
What to expect
- Week 1–2: less itching. The scalp feels calmer by evening.
- Week 4–6: less hair coming away on wash day.
- Eight to twelve weeks: the honest point to judge it. Hair cycles are slow and nothing changes that.
Who it suits
Almost everyone, and particularly anyone whose hair fall started after a difficult few months. Fine hair should stay at the lower end of the dose. If your scalp is very oily, use it for an hour before washing rather than overnight.
If the hair fall is sudden, patchy, or came with other symptoms, see a doctor before you see a hair oil. No oil treats an underlying condition, and a thyroid problem or an iron deficiency will outlast any amount of champi.
Brahmi Oil is available on its own, or in The Three Oils and The Complete Hair Collection.
