Arjun Chhal: The Ayurvedic Heart Tonic and How to Make Ksheerpak

Arjun Chhal: The Ayurvedic Heart Tonic and How to Make Ksheerpak

Most classical Ayurvedic herbs are used across many systems. Arjuna is unusual: for two thousand years the texts have described it doing one thing.

It is the bark Ayurveda names for the heart, and it has been described that way since the Charaka Samhita.

What Arjun Chhal Is

Terminalia arjuna is a tall tree found across India, recognisable by smooth pale bark that sheds naturally in sheets. That shedding matters — the bark can be harvested without killing the tree, which is not true of every medicinal bark.

The bark is stripped, dried and ground. Classical texts class it as hridya — a herb for the heart.

Traditional Uses

The heart tonic

Arjuna's principal and best-documented traditional use, and the reason it is still widely taken. This is not a modern reinterpretation — it is what the oldest texts say.

Supporting circulation

Used alongside the above, following the same reasoning.

Strength and endurance

Given to support physical stamina, which follows naturally from its traditional cardiac use.

Skin

The bark is strongly astringent and is used externally in pastes, though this is secondary.

Important, Before Anything Else

If you have any heart condition, or take any medication for blood pressure, heart rhythm, cholesterol or blood thinning, speak to your doctor before taking arjuna.

This matters more here than with most herbs, for two reasons. It may interact with cardiac medication. And it must never be used in place of prescribed treatment.

Arjuna is a traditional tonic. It is not a substitute for cardiology.

Arjun Ksheerpak — the Classical Preparation

Ksheerpak means milk-cooked, and it is the method the texts specify. It takes about twenty minutes and it is worth doing properly.

  1. 1 teaspoon arjuna bark powder
  2. 1 cup milk and 1 cup water
  3. Simmer on a low flame until only the one cup of milk remains — the water should boil off
  4. Strain
  5. Drink warm

Take it on an empty stomach in the morning, or at night before bed.

The water is not filler. Cooking the powder in milk-and-water and reducing to the milk volume is the specified method, and the long gentle simmer is what extracts the bark properly.

Simpler Methods

With warm water: ½ to 1 teaspoon in warm water, morning and evening. Quicker, less traditional.

As a kadha: 1 teaspoon simmered in 2 cups of water down to one cup. Strained, drunk warm.

With honey: ½ teaspoon in a spoon of honey. Easiest, given how astringent the bark is.

Dosage

Starting dose ½ teaspoon (about 1.5g) once a day
Regular dose 1 teaspoon (about 3g), once or twice a day
Best time Empty stomach — morning or before bed
How long Traditionally taken over months

Arjuna is a long-term tonic. Classical use is measured in months, not weeks, and there is no version of it that works quickly.

Why Your Mouth Goes Dry

Arjuna bark is high in tannins and strongly astringent — it dries the mouth noticeably. That is normal, expected, and a reasonable sign you have the real thing.

Mild, unremarkable arjuna powder is worth questioning.

How to Tell Good Arjuna

  • Pale pinkish-brown to light tan. Very dark powder suggests old or badly stored bark
  • Distinctly astringent — it should dry the mouth
  • Finely sifted, without woody splinters
  • Bark only on the label
  • Sealed pack with a manufacturing date

Frequently Asked Questions

Milk or water?
Milk, as ksheerpak, is the method the classical texts specify. Water is acceptable and much quicker.

Can I take it with my heart medication?
Not without asking your doctor. This is the most important question on the page.

How long before it does anything?
It is a long-term tonic. Months, not weeks.

Morning or night?
Either. An empty stomach matters more than the time of day.

Powder or capsules?
Powder, if you want to make ksheerpak — and ksheerpak is the traditional form. Capsules cannot be used that way.

Is the tree harmed when bark is taken?
Not necessarily. Arjuna sheds its bark naturally, so it can be collected without felling the tree.

Final Thoughts

Arjuna has one clear traditional purpose and two thousand years of consistent description behind it. Taken as ksheerpak, on an empty stomach, over months.

And talk to your doctor first if you take anything for your heart. That is not a disclaimer, it is the practical advice.

At Ayurveda Amrita our Arjun Chhal Powder is pure bark, finely sifted, with nothing added.
